Podholes #02: To Skype or Not to Skype
December 1st, 2006 by
Steve Eley
Mike and Steve break more rules by tearing apart their first episode. Topics covered:
- Is this #1 or #2?
- Double-enders (and why Mike won’t let us do one)
- We discover a hidden flaw in the iRiver
- Mike turns Steve into a newt
- What do you think? Should Steve Skype in or double-end?
- Basic Podcast Rules: don’t get your first episode perfect, just do it
- Mike drools over a Tascam DM4800 which nobody can afford
- Don’t stress the equipment you have
- Question (from Michael Dean): “What do you do when you have too many items on your RSS feed?”
- Support Steve (if you want to) by buying or selling CDs at PodDisc.com
- New feature! Submit your podcast, we’ll critique it. (Should we call it “P.A.P. Smear?” Mike says yes, Steve says no.)

Um… I think this isn’t going to show up in the show’s feed until you change the category. That, or something else is wrong with it.

I agree with you guys that the best way to start podcasting is to simply START PODCASTING! I’m about to do my 50th show, and I’m still learning stuff all the time.
Really enjoyed this episode. Looking forward to the next.

I forgot to mention that the little brother of the DM 4800 is the DM 3200. $2000 less that the one I want. (As if that helps)

Just thought I would say. I don’t mind Skype. Mike does a great job with the audio. My only problem is when two people try to talk at the same time Skype seems to bung things up.
Thanks for the great show.

Great show guys….I really enjoy hearing about the tech side of podcasting.

Great show. Steve, please continue to make sure Mike explains what all those “techie” terms mean by asking him questions. I’m very new to the production side of podcasting, so those details are essential for me…
As far as the name PAP Smear, I’d say go with it. It’s not like the segment is going to live outside of the show. People have to listen to the podcast to learn about the PAP smear. If people listen to the show, they’re going to eventually get the joke (I figured it out after show #2). And once you understand the title, it is quite funny.

On the Skype vs. Double-ender debate. Mike does a great job on the audio quality. That’s no problem.
What is a problem is the fact that sometimes Skype just breaks down (up?) and parts of Steve’s comment get lost. It makes it really annoying to listen to. Kind of like an MP3 “artefact” where the compression glitched for a moment.
But then again, it should take Mike forever to mix it down to a single (stereo) track. (But then AGAIN, I bet Mike just _likes_ it to tinker with all his hardware).

Keep on using Mike’s studio w/ Steve skyping in. Mike spent a fortune on that studio and he’s got to get to put it to use as much as possible to justify all the $$$ he sunk into it.
Mike’s many, many filters do help improve the Skype sound quality quite a bit. The Skype raw audio is pretty easy to listen to, but the mega-filtered version is a lot *easier* to listen to.

Mike, how about some pictures of your studio?

I need to have some new ones taken. The ones I have are old. maybe if I get my shiny new mixer, I’ll have some professional ones done for the site(s)

Hey Guys,
Just catching up with your show. The processing that Mike does on Skype makes it sound very good…but as Steve constantly reminds us…that set up, to reproduce, would cost a bajillion dollars. I like PAP Smear as a segment name. As Carrie said, it works in the context of the podcast and is quite clever.
