Podholes #07: Question Authority
January 19th, 2007 by
Steve Eley
An all-question episode! (Mostly.)
- Mike breaks the all-question concept immediately by telling us about his new mixer
- Voice comment from Kevin Bachelder (of The Scapecast): sometimes first episodes can win awards (just rub it in, Kevin)
- Voice question from Sam Chupp (of The Bear’s Grove): what do these software controls on the Samson C01 USB mic do?
- Question from Tim Callahan (of the podiobook Ida): how do you get the word out about your podcast, and how do you get interviewed?
- Question from Jason Muirhead: can we recommend a podcast rig for traveling?
P.A.P. Smear #3: We’ll be critiquing Episode 43 of The Riverbend Rock Show. Listen first, then hear us talk about it next week..

Hey Guys,
Thanks for including my voicemail on the show. While it is true that I had a good amount of podcasting experience before we started ‘The ScapeCast’ the rest of our crew were all newbies to podcasting and they had a lot more to do with us winning the award that I did!
Thanks again for doing your show. S
Steve… you can tell me how much I suck in person at Dragon*Con this year.

Yeah, but Kevin, that first show was far from typical 1st episodes.
You guys knew what you wanted and did it well.

We had some good insirpation from a lot of other podcasts.
“Shoulders of Giants” and all that.
In other subjects, will you be putting links in the show notes to the websites for the technical equipment you’ve been discussing?

Thanks very for the compliment Mike.
I wasn’t trying to downplay how hard it is to create your first show. I just wanted to make sure to give proper credit to the rest of the hardworking and dedicated ScapeCast crew.

Understood Kevin… I’m just trying to give credit where credit is due.
As for the links to equipment…
BSWUSA.com
Zzounds.com
If do a search on the site. You’ll find what we talk about.
Oh, but my perdy, sexy new mixer…

Read all about it here. I have the one-sheet under my pillow so I can dream about it at night.
(God… I need a life.)

Hey Mike and Steve, thanks so much for answering my question. Sorry to send you a graphic to look at (I *know* it’s an audio podcast), but I wanted you to see what I see.
Anyway, I’m gonna leave the Phase button alone and set my Low Cut to 40 Mhz. Thanks again!

Thanks for answering my question guys, looks like I’m going to have to come up with a kick ass promo now! I’ve learned so much from this Podcast! Get ready for more questions, I’ve got a list going!

After recording this week’s Podholes (and our long discussion about cutting lows on your mics) I punched in all my low cut switches on my mixer. You will be able to hear what the result of that was on this week’s Wingin’ It! and Slice of Scifi shows.
I said in the show (PHs), adding in the low cut would not have a dramatic effect on vocals unless the host’s voice was really deep. Well guess what. The low, bass-dominant voices of our crew sure took a beating with the low cuts turned on. We all ended up a bit pinched and mid-heavy. The only ones that sounded right were Debbie and Shelia. (Go figure)
This just drives home a point. It is very important to take the time to experiment with your equipment settings before you hit the record button for the final take.
Since the sound is all funky and we often seem to be talking into tin cans, I thought I would take this opportunity to use my screw-up as a teaching tool for Podholes.
See how dedicated I am to the content of this show? No, no… I do it for the love of the craft… Really!
