Podholes #11: Uniquely Different

This is not the mixer episode. REPEAT: THIS IS NOT THE MIXER EPISODE.
- No, seriously. This is not the mixer episode!
- Mike: “Think of it as water. Think of it as hooking up a bunch of hoses.”
- Steve’s Rant: When do you not need a mixer? When’s a USB mic or USB headset the right answer?
- Steve: When you get a mixer, things get more complicated.
- Mike: Approach podcasting as any other hobby. There are going to be costs.
- Mike: Podcast Station is radio-style recording and editing for your podcast. Check it out!
- Question from Tee Morris (The Survival Guide to Writing Fantasy): What is latency, and are all USB mics uniformly bad about latency?
- Steve doesn’t monitor himself with headphones when he’s recording. Mike thinks this is insane.
- Question from Shaun Farrell (Adventures in Sci-Fi Publishing): Any tips for using the Levelator? Will it always raise the level of the background noise?
- (Steve is using the Levelator on Podholes now, so listen and decide for yourself how it sounds.)
- Mike’s now lusting after the Mackie MCU Pro. (Not that anyone can afford it, even him.)
P.A.P. Smear #5: We’ll be critiquing Episode 34 of PodCulture. Listen to the episode, then hear us talk about it next week…

For some reason I can’t download this episode, the others are fine but this one just won’t come down in firefox or itunes on either my mac or my pc.

Yes, same here .. JUICE or direct download with Firefox will not work.

Well, shit. That’s because Libsyn appears to be down today. Again.
And, of course, this is the one time I listened to Mike and put the episode up in the Dragon Page’s Libsyn space instead of my own Web space.
I’ve just changed it and put the episode into my Escape Pod directory instead. So you can download it directly now, and your feeds should start working as soon as Feedburner gets around to noticing. Thank you for the heads up.
We will argue about Libsyn in a future episode. I’m the one person in podcasting who’s not totally in love with them.

What do you guys think of mixer boards with USB and Firewire outs? I’ve been looking at some of the Alesis multimix range as a starting mixer with USB or Firewire output to my laptop. Does that have the power issues you described with mics dropping out?

Steve….you are not the only podcaster annoyed with Libsyn. I’d consider switching hosts, but I can’t find one as affordable as they are.

My current desktop computer needs to be replaced. I figure now might be a really good time to consider switching to a Mac platform. What type of desktop would work well for audio editing.
PS thanks to you guys I can’t go a day without going over to BSW and ogling shiny new equipment. *homer voice* “mmmmmmmmm mixers”

The new dual core Mac Mini loaded with 2 gig of memory may sever you well. It is quiet, small and won’t break the bank.
It’s worth a look.
*One side note, to get the speed you need, plan on spending extra bucks on an external firewire drive. The 2.5 drive that is in the mini is slow and sluggish. Taking your important, high-bandwidth content and programs off the laptop HD and putting them on something with a faster seek time will kick things up a notch or ten.

New fan. Can’t download eps 6-11. Don’t know if this is the place to leave this message but thought it was worth a try.
Any help is greatly appriciated.
Thanks in advance,
Brent
