Podholes #13: My Mixer, My Self
March 2nd, 2007 by
Steve Eley
Mike couldn’t make it this week, so Steve’s stuck all by his lonesome. He gets his revenge by bringing you, in Mike’s absence…
(drum roll)
THE MIXER EPISODE.
It runs a bit long, but Steve covers all the basics of mixers for podcasters: setting levels, hooking up compressors and other devices, and which features (EQ, USB, Firewire, etc.) are generally useful and which ones aren’t.
(Question for the audience: Would an enhanced version of this episode with pictures be useful to anyone? Or is the monologue self-explanatory enough that illustrations wouldn’t add anything? I’m willing to put in the work, but only if it would truly be helpful.)

If you do it one week, we expect it every week. I haven’t heard the show yet, so I can’t comment if it would be more useful.

Well since I do not have a player that can play enhanced podcasts my vote would be no for an enhanced version. However I could see where it would be helpful….especially since I just purchased a new mixer myself.

Images would definitely be helpful, since when I listen to this podcast, I don’t have my mixer in front of me to follow along with.

I think an enhanced podcast would be interesting and useful. But to echo Brad, I’m not sure if I’ve got the right player for it so I’d need more information on getting the enhanced podcast readable on my system(s)

this was great. Thank you. I would be interested in some photos, but I was able to follow along without them. But I’ve used a mixer or two in the past. At least now I understand inserts and aux sends more clearly.

While I am not a podcaster, this episode is the basic tutorial I have wanted to get for the audio at the church I attend(sound problems are driving me crazy ’cause I know very little about using the mixer).
If you do an enhanced podcast, if you can find a way to not put it in the feed, yet still post on the site, I know I would appredicate it, if not many others.

Very good show, I’ve always wondered how to use a mixed. I don’t have one (yet) and there’s a lot of good advice. I think some pictures well help. They don’t have to be in an enhanced podcast, they could just be linked to a flikr set with some time notation.

This was an excellent show. I’m just getting ready to purchase a mixer and this cleared up things a great deal. I would love to hear about cost effective way of getting sound from my mixer into my computer from a mixer that has channel inserts.

Hey Steve, this was a great show until it stopped half way through. It just says ‘buffering’ meh. Hopefully I’ll get it worked out. I started listening to this from the beginning on Tuesday and am LOVING it. It’s so interesting to see how different your pod persona is when you’re alone and when your with Mike. Oh yeah! Yay for Stink Fungus, or whatever the hell that term was. Scone!
